Yes, We Have Drainage
OK, from the results of the soil composition test, I now know that I have “sandy clay loam”. That’s an official name, too, and comes from this handy chart:
And I’m at the intersection of 50% sand, 30% clay and 20% silt, or right around the “Y” in clay. So that’s good to know. (And now you know it too!)
So it looks like nobody got too interested in the hole overnight.
And inside, it’s damp but basically empty.
Yay! Or, maybe not quite empty.
Those are ants. Not the big harvester ants from the other day, these are just regular old, medium sized black ants. I had seen some of them swimming in the water yesterday, and the ones you see there are about half dead ants and half live ones, cleaning up the dead ones. There are more ants, smaller ants, racing around the top of the hole.
OK, I know there are at least three live ants (and a couple of dead ones) in this picture. Even if you can’t see them, it’s a pretty good close-up of my dirt. And who doesn’t love a good, close-up picture of dirt, eh?
This afternoon, a roadrunner stopped by to snack on the ants, but Rats! when I got my camera out to take his picture, he ran behind a bush. Shy, I guess.
